Description

This Tteokbokki Korean Food With Rice recipe brings the ultimate spicy street food experience home. Chewy rice cakes are simmered in a fiery gochujang sauce with optional fish cakes, eggs, and green onions. Bold, comforting, and authentic, it’s the perfect introduction to Korean cuisine.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450 g) Korean rice cakes (tteok), fresh or frozen
  • 4 cups (950 ml) water
  • 1 sheet dried kelp (kombu), optional
  • 1/2 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 green onions, chopped (white and green parts separated)
  • 1/2 cup Korean fish cakes (eomuk), sliced (optional)
  • 1 hard-boiled egg, peeled (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1.5 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 1 teaspoon gochugaru (Korean chili flakes), optional
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic

Pro Tip: Soak frozen rice cakes in warm water for 10–15 minutes before cooking.

Instructions

  1. Prepare the broth: In a pot, combine water, soy sauce, gochujang, sugar, and garlic. Add kombu for 10 minutes on low heat if using, then remove before boiling.
  2. Simmer: Bring broth to a light simmer, stirring until smooth.
  3. Add vegetables: Add onion and the white part of green onions.
  4. Add rice cakes and fish cakes: Stir in soaked tteok and fish cakes. Simmer 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Add eggs: Place boiled eggs into the sauce halfway through if using.
  6. Finish: Once sauce thickens and rice cakes are chewy-soft, remove from heat. Garnish with green onion tops.
  7. Serve: Enjoy hot with pickled radish, dumplings, or noodles.

Notes

  • Always soak frozen rice cakes to prevent cracking.
  • Stir frequently to avoid sticking.
  • Adjust spice by reducing gochugaru or adding more sugar.
  • Add cheese, chicken, or extra veggies for variations.
  • Best served hot and fresh, like in Korean street stalls.
