Ingredients

Scale
    • For the beef:
    • 1 lb ground beef (or thinly sliced sirloin)
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, minced
    • 12 Thai red chilies, sliced (to taste)
    • 1 tbsp soy sauce
    • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
    • 1 tbsp fish sauce
    • 1 tsp brown sugar
    • 1 tbsp sesame oil
    • 1/2 cup fresh Thai basil leaves

    • For the rolls:
    • 1 head butter lettuce or romaine leaves
    • 1 cucumber, thinly sliced
    • 1 carrot, julienned
    • Fresh cilantro leaves
    • Optional: rice paper wrappers

  • For garnish:
  • Toasted sesame seeds
  • Lime wedges
  • Extra Thai basil

Instructions

  1. Cook the beef: Heat sesame oil in a skillet or wok. Add garlic, ginger, and chilies, sauté 1–2 minutes. Add beef, cook until browned.
  2. Season: Stir in soy sauce, hoisin, fish sauce, and brown sugar. Cook 3–4 minutes. Add Thai basil, stir until wilted, then remove from heat.
  3. Prep veggies: Wash lettuce, slice cucumber and carrot into thin sticks.
  4. Assemble: Place beef in lettuce leaves or rice paper. Add cucumber, carrot, cilantro. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and squeeze lime juice. Wrap and serve.

Notes

  • Use authentic Thai basil for the best flavor—its peppery, licorice-like taste is unique.
  • Don’t overfill rolls; keep them light and easy to wrap.
  • If using rice paper, dip quickly (5–7 seconds) to avoid tearing.
  • Store beef and veggies separately if prepping ahead.
  • Customize with peanuts, pineapple, or extra chilies for variation.
