Ingredients
Scale
For the Truffles:
- 1 box cake mix (flavor of choice)
- Ingredients for baking the cake (per package instructions – usually eggs, oil, water)
- 1 cup frosting (vanilla works best for lighter color)
For the Coating and Decoration:
- 16 oz white candy melts or white chocolate
- 1/2 cup colored candy melts (blue, green, or brown for iris)
- 1/2 cup red candy melts or red icing (for veins)
- Mini chocolate chips or black icing (for pupils)
Tools:
- Large mixing bowls
- Baking sheet lined with parchment
- Spoon or cookie scoop
- Microwave-safe bowls
- Fork or truffle dipping tool
- Piping bags or toothpicks for decorating
Instructions
- Bake the cake: Prepare cake per package directions and let cool completely.
- Crumble and mix: Crumble cooled cake in a large bowl, add frosting gradually, and mix until dough-like.
- Shape: Roll into 1-inch balls, place on parchment-lined sheet, and chill 1–2 hours.
- Coat: Melt white candy melts in 30-second intervals, stirring until smooth. Dip truffles, letting excess drip off, then set on sheet.
- Add iris and pupil: Pipe colored candy melt circles for the iris, then place mini chocolate chip or dot of black icing for pupil.
- Create veins: Use red candy melts or icing to draw thin vein lines from iris to edge.
Notes
- Flavor variations: Use different cake flavors or colors for a surprise inside.
- Theme ideas: Make mismatched monster eyes or glow effects with LED lights under serving plate.
- Tips: Work in batches when coating, chill before decorating, and avoid overheating candy melts.
- Serving ideas: Arrange on a dark platter, in a skull candy dish, or on skewers in a pumpkin for a spooky display.
- Storage: Airtight container at room temp for 3 days, refrigerate up to 1 week, or freeze undecorated up to 1 month.
