Description

When you crave bold, savory flavors with tender beef and crisp vegetables, Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions is the perfect dish to satisfy that appetite.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 500g (1 lb) beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 bell peppers (one green, one red), sliced into strips
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tsp black pepper (freshly ground)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • ½ cup beef broth or water
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp sesame oil (optional)
  • 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the beef: In a bowl, combine sliced beef with 1 tbsp soy sauce, black pepper, and cornstarch. Toss well and let marinate for 15 minutes.
  2. Prepare the sauce: Mix the remaining soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, and beef broth in a small bowl. Set aside.
  3. Cook the beef: Heat vegetable oil in a hot wok over high heat. Stir-fry the beef quickly until browned but not fully cooked, about 2-3 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  4. Sauté aromatics and veggies: In the same wok, add garlic and ginger, sauté for 30 seconds until fragrant. Add sliced onions and bell peppers and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until tender-crisp.
  5. Combine and simmer: Return the beef to the wok. Pour the sauce over the ingredients, stirring to coat everything evenly. Cook for another 2 minutes until the sauce thickens and beef is cooked through. Drizzle with sesame oil if using.
  6. Garnish and serve: Sprinkle chopped green onions on top. Serve immediately with steamed rice or noodles.

Notes

Slice the beef thinly against the grain to ensure tenderness. Use a very hot wok or skillet to quickly sear the beef and vegetables, preserving texture and flavor. Don’t overcrowd the pan; cook in batches if necessary. Cornstarch in the marinade helps thicken the sauce and keeps beef juicy. Freshly ground black pepper adds a nice kick—don’t skimp on it!
