Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients:

  • 1 ⅔ cups (210g) all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup (25g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients:

  • ½ cup (115g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup (50g) brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring

Rolling and Coating:

  • ½ cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Cream butter and sugars: In a large mixing bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes).
  4. Add wet ingredients: Beat in the eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla, vinegar, and red food coloring until evenly combined.
  5. Combine dough: Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture and mix until a soft dough forms.
  6. Chill the dough: Cover and refrigerate for 1–2 hours until firm enough to handle.
  7. Shape and coat: Scoop 1-inch dough balls, roll each in granulated sugar, then in powdered sugar.
  8. Bake: Place dough balls 2 inches apart on baking sheets. Bake for 10–12 minutes until tops crack and centers are slightly soft.
  9. Cool: Let cookies cool on the tray for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Chill the dough for at least 1 hour for best crinkle texture.
  • Roll generously in powdered sugar for that signature snow-like look.
  • Don’t overbake — the cookies should remain soft in the center.
  • Use quality cocoa powder for a rich, velvety flavor.
  • Add ½ cup white or dark chocolate chips for an indulgent twist.
