Ingredients
Scale
For the Donuts
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Oil for frying (if frying)
For the Maple Glaze
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 tablespoon milk (adjust for consistency)
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon until combined.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In another bowl, whisk buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla until smooth. Pour into dry ingredients and mix gently until just combined.
- Shape the Donuts: For frying, roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness and cut out donuts. For baking, spoon batter into a greased donut pan, filling each cavity 2/3 full.
- Cook the Donuts: To fry, heat oil to 350°F (175°C) and cook 1–2 minutes per side until golden. To bake, bake at 375°F (190°C) for 10–12 minutes.
- Cool Before Glazing: Let donuts cool 10 minutes on a wire rack before dipping in glaze.
- Make the Maple Glaze: Mix powdered sugar, maple syrup, melted butter, milk, and salt until smooth. Dip each donut, twist gently, and let set for 15 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Use real maple syrup for authentic flavor — pancake syrup won’t give the same depth.
- Do not overmix the batter to keep donuts soft and tender.
- Check oil temperature with a thermometer to avoid greasy donuts.
- Let glaze set completely before stacking or storing.
- Storage: Keep in an airtight container up to 2 days, or freeze unglazed donuts for 2 months.
