Description
These Jack-O-Lantern Hand Pies are the ultimate Halloween treat—flaky, buttery crusts filled with warmly spiced pumpkin puree and decorated with spooky jack-o-lantern faces. Perfect for Coraline or Wednesday Addams-themed parties, they’re as fun to make as they are to eat.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 refrigerated pie crusts (or homemade)
- 1 cup pumpkin purée (not pumpkin pie filling)
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon milk
- Granulated sugar, for sprinkling
- Optional: 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional: Maple syrup drizzle for topping
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a small bowl, mix pumpkin purée, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and vanilla (if using). Set aside.
- Roll out the pie crusts and use a pumpkin-shaped cookie cutter to cut out shapes, making sure you have an even number.
- On half the cutouts, carve jack-o-lantern faces using a small knife.
- Place a tablespoon of filling onto the plain pumpkin cutouts. Top with the face cutouts and press edges with a fork to seal.
- Mix egg and milk, then brush over the pies. Sprinkle with granulated sugar.
- Bake for 18–20 minutes until golden brown. Cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Overfilling can cause leakage—use only about a tablespoon of filling per pie.
- Use chilled dough and cooled filling for better structure.
- Make ahead: Refrigerate unbaked pies for 1 day or freeze for up to 1 month.
- To reheat, place in a 300°F oven for 5–8 minutes to crisp up again.
- Customize with apple cinnamon, Nutella-banana, or cream cheese fillings for variety.
