Ingredients
Scale
- 1 teaspoon matcha powder (ceremonial or culinary grade)
- 2 ounces hot water (not boiling – about 80°C/175°F)
- 1 teaspoon honey, maple syrup, or sweetener of choice (optional)
- ¾ cup milk (dairy, almond, oat, soy, or coconut – your choice)
- ½ cup ice
Optional toppings or mix-ins:
- Splash of vanilla extract
- Cinnamon or matcha dust for garnish
- Coconut cream for a richer texture
Instructions
- Sift your matcha: This helps prevent lumps and ensures a smoother drink. Add 1 teaspoon of sifted matcha powder to a small bowl or cup.
- Whisk with hot water: Pour 2 ounces of hot (not boiling) water over the matcha. Use a bamboo whisk or frother to blend in a zig-zag (M or W) motion until smooth and frothy.
- Sweeten if desired: Stir in your sweetener of choice—honey, maple syrup, or a dash of simple syrup.
- Add ice and milk: Fill a tall glass halfway with ice, then pour in ¾ cup of cold milk.
- Top with matcha mixture: Slowly pour the whisked matcha over the milk and ice. Watch the beautiful layers form!
- Stir and enjoy: Give it a gentle stir or sip as-is to enjoy the gradient.
Notes
Never use boiling water
Always sift your matcha before whisking to prevent lumps
Use a bamboo whisk for traditional froth and smoothness
Whisk in an M or W motion not a circular one for better consistency
Sweeten to balance if you’re not used to the earthy flavor
