Homemade Funnel Cake Bites : Tasty & Delicious

If you’ve ever been to a carnival, state fair, or amusement park, chances are you’ve sunk your teeth into the sweet, crispy, golden goodness of funnel cake.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ cup milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola oil recommended)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

Step 1: Heat the Oil
In a deep skillet or saucepan, pour enough oil to reach about 2 inches in depth. Heat over medium to medium-high heat until the temperature reaches 350°F (175°C). Use a kitchen thermometer for best results.

Step 2: Mix the Batter
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, combine the egg, milk, and vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The batter will be smooth and pourable.

Step 3: Fry the Bites
Once the oil is hot, carefully drop spoonfuls of batter into the oil. Work in small batches—about 4 to 6 at a time. Fry the bites for 1–2 minutes per side, or until golden brown and puffed. Flip halfway through for even cooking.

Step 4: Drain and Cool
Use a slotted spoon to transfer the fried bites to a paper towel-lined plate or wire rack to drain off excess oil.

Step 5: Dust and Serve
Once the bites have cooled slightly, dust generously with powdered sugar. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Maintain the oil temperature – Too low and the bites absorb oil; too high and they burn
  • Use a thermometer – 350°F is ideal for frying
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan – Fry in batches to avoid dropping the oil temperature
