Frosted Coffee Brownies: Fudgy & Absolutely Irresistible

  • Author: Lyndy
  • Total Time: About 1 hour 20 minutes

Description

There’s something undeniably comforting about a warm brownie, fresh from the oven. But when you add a rich swirl of brewed coffee to both the batter and the frosting, you’re entering next-level indulgence.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Brownies:

  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup strong brewed coffee or espresso
  • ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup chocolate chips or chunks (optional)

For the Coffee Frosting:

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp strong brewed coffee
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

1. Preheat and Prepare

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8×8-inch baking dish with parchment paper.

2. Make the Brownie Batter

In a saucepan or microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter. Stir in the sugar, eggs, vanilla, and brewed coffee until smooth. Add cocoa powder, flour, and salt. Stir until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips if using.

3. Bake

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Let brownies cool completely in the pan before frosting.

4. Prepare the Frosting

In a medium bowl, beat the softened butter until fluffy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, brewed coffee, vanilla, and salt. Beat until smooth and spreadable.

5. Frost and Slice

Spread frosting evenly over cooled brownies. Refrigerate for 10–15 minutes to help set the top, then cut into 9 squares.

Notes

  • Use strong coffee or espresso for the best flavor. Instant espresso powder dissolved in water works too!
  • Don’t overbake — fudgy brownies should be slightly underdone in the center when removed from the oven.
  • Cool completely before frosting to avoid melting the butter in the icing.
  • Add-ins: Try walnuts, caramel bits, or swap the chocolate chips for white chocolate for a fun twist.
