- 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
- 1 cup (240ml) milk
- 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Zest of 1 orange or lemon (optional)
- 1 tablespoon honey or simple syrup, for drizzling
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
- Prepare the phyllo dough: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Unroll the phyllo dough and let it rest at room temperature for 10 minutes. Crinkle each sheet accordion-style and place it vertically in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish until full.
- Bake to set the shape: Bake for 10 minutes to firm up the phyllo. Remove from oven and brush the entire surface generously with melted butter.
- Bake until golden: Return to the oven for another 10–15 minutes, until golden and crispy.
- Prepare the custard: In a large bowl, whisk together sugar, eggs, milk, cream, and vanilla until smooth. Add citrus zest if desired.
- Pour and soak: Slowly pour the custard evenly over the baked phyllo, ensuring all folds are covered.
- Final bake: Bake for 30–35 minutes, until the custard sets and the edges are golden brown.
- Cool and serve: Let cool for 15 minutes, drizzle with honey or syrup, and dust with powdered sugar. Serve warm or at room temperature.
