  • Author: Lyndy
  • Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Yield: 3 cups 1x

Description

Easy Tomato Chutney is a sweet, tangy, and richly spiced homemade condiment that transforms simple meals into something extraordinary. Made with ripe tomatoes, vinegar, and warm spices, this chutney is the perfect balance of savory and sweet — ideal for spreading on sandwiches, serving with curries, or gifting as a homemade treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds (900g) ripe tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 large onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • ½ teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Prepare Ingredients: Chop tomatoes, onions, and garlic. Measure out all ingredients before cooking.
  2. Sauté Aromatics: Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add onions and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic and ginger until fragrant.
  3. Add Tomatoes and Spices: Stir in chopped tomatoes, mustard seeds, chili flakes, and salt. Add vinegar and brown sugar. Mix well.
  4. Simmer: Reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 45–60 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thick and jam-like.
  5. Adjust and Cool: Taste and adjust sugar or vinegar for balance. Let cool slightly before transferring to sterilized jars.
  6. Store: Seal tightly and refrigerate for up to 4 weeks. Flavor deepens over time.

Notes

  • Use ripe tomatoes for the best natural sweetness.
  • Simmer on low heat to avoid burning and develop rich flavor.
  • Taste for balance — sweetness, acidity, and spice should harmonize.
  • For longer storage, process sealed jars in a hot water bath for 10 minutes.
  • Pairs beautifully with cheese boards, grilled meats, or roasted vegetables.
