Ingredients
For the Dough:
-
- 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
-
- ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
-
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
-
- ½ teaspoon salt
-
- ¾ cup (180ml) warm milk (110°F/43°C)
-
- ¼ cup (56g) unsalted butter, melted
-
- 1 large egg
For the Egg Wash:
-
- 1 egg yolk
-
- 1 tablespoon milk
For Decoration (Optional):
-
- Chocolate chips or raisins (for eyes)
-
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
-
- Honey or butter (for serving)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
In a small bowl, mix the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add the melted butter, egg, and yeast mixture, then mix until a dough forms. Knead by hand for 10 minutes or use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
Step 2: Let the Dough Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Step 3: Shape the Bunny Rolls
Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball.
To make bunny shapes:
-
- Use scissors or a sharp knife to cut two small “ears” at the top of each dough ball.
-
- Gently pinch the tips to form pointed ears.
-
- Press chocolate chips or raisins into the dough to create eyes.
Step 4: Apply the Egg Wash
Whisk together the egg yolk and milk, then brush over the rolls for a golden finish.
Step 5: Bake
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
Let the bunny bread cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar or serve with butter, jam, or honey for extra sweetness.
Notes
✔ Use Warm Milk (Not Hot!) – Ensures the yeast activates properly.
✔ Don’t Over-Knead the Dough – This keeps the rolls light and fluffy.
✔ Make Sure the Dough Rises Fully – A good rise creates soft and airy rolls.
