Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough:

    • 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour

    • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar

    • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast

    • ½ teaspoon salt

    • ¾ cup (180ml) warm milk (110°F/43°C)

    • ¼ cup (56g) unsalted butter, melted

    • 1 large egg

For the Egg Wash:

    • 1 egg yolk

    • 1 tablespoon milk

For Decoration (Optional):

    • Chocolate chips or raisins (for eyes)

    • Powdered sugar (for dusting)

    • Honey or butter (for serving)

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

In a small bowl, mix the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Add the melted butter, egg, and yeast mixture, then mix until a dough forms. Knead by hand for 10 minutes or use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

Step 2: Let the Dough Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Step 3: Shape the Bunny Rolls

Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball.

To make bunny shapes:

    • Use scissors or a sharp knife to cut two small “ears” at the top of each dough ball.

    • Gently pinch the tips to form pointed ears.

    • Press chocolate chips or raisins into the dough to create eyes.

Step 4: Apply the Egg Wash

Whisk together the egg yolk and milk, then brush over the rolls for a golden finish.

Step 5: Bake

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the rolls for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 6: Serve and Enjoy

Let the bunny bread cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar or serve with butter, jam, or honey for extra sweetness.

Notes

Use Warm Milk (Not Hot!) – Ensures the yeast activates properly.
Don’t Over-Knead the Dough – This keeps the rolls light and fluffy.
Make Sure the Dough Rises Fully – A good rise creates soft and airy rolls.
