  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

For the Chocolate Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 9-inch cake pans.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: Sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: Mix coffee, buttermilk, and sour cream in a bowl.
  4. Cream Butter & Sugar: Beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3–4 minutes.
  5. Add Eggs: Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
  6. Combine Batter: Alternate adding dry ingredients and coffee mixture, starting and ending with dry.
  7. Bake: Divide batter between pans and bake 30–35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Cool: Cool 10 minutes in pans, then transfer to racks to cool completely.
  9. Make Frosting: Beat butter, then add cocoa, powdered sugar, cream, salt, and vanilla until fluffy.
  10. Assemble: Frost cooled cake layers as desired.
