Ingredients

Scale

For the Bread Pudding:

  • 6 cups cubed day-old bread (white, brioche, or challah)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/2 cup raisins or dried fruit (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (for greasing dish)

For the Vanilla Sauce:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare Bread: Cube day-old bread and set aside. Lightly toast if fresh.
  2. Make Custard: In a bowl, whisk milk, cream, sugar, eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg until smooth.
  3. Soak Bread: Add bread to custard and let sit 10–15 minutes to absorb. Stir in raisins if using.
  4. Assemble: Grease a 9×9-inch dish with butter. Pour bread and custard mixture in and spread evenly.
  5. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 40–45 minutes until golden and set but slightly jiggly.
  6. Make Sauce: While baking, heat cream, butter, sugar, vanilla, and salt in a saucepan over medium, stirring until smooth. Do not boil.
  7. Serve: Cool pudding slightly, slice, and drizzle with warm vanilla sauce. Enjoy!
