Ingredients

Scale

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Wet Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Mix-ins and Decorations

  • ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips (optional)
  • ½ cup colorful sprinkles (rainbow jimmies work best)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream butter and sugars: In a large mixing bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg and vanilla, then mix well.
  4. Combine and fold: Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients until a soft dough forms. Stir in chocolate chips if using.
  5. Shape and roll: Scoop 1½-inch dough balls and roll them in sprinkles until fully coated. Place on prepared baking sheet 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake: Bake for 9–11 minutes, until edges are set but centers are still soft. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a rack.

Notes

  • Chill the dough for 30 minutes if your kitchen is warm.
  • Don’t overbake — cookies firm up as they cool.
  • Use room-temperature butter and egg for even mixing.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
  • Freeze dough balls for up to 3 months and bake directly from frozen.
