Ingredients
Scale
For the Biscuits:
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 6 tablespoons cold butter, cubed
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- ¾ cup milk (preferably whole milk)
For the Topping:
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon dried rosemary (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, garlic powder, sugar, and salt.
- Cut in the Butter: Add the cold cubed butter to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or fork to cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add the Cheese and Milk: Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese. Then, add the milk and stir until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix the dough.
- Form the Biscuits: Scoop out the dough with a spoon and place it onto the prepared baking sheet, forming 8 to 10 biscuits.
- Bake: Bake the biscuits for 10-12 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the biscuits have risen.
- Make the Garlic Butter Topping: While the biscuits are baking, melt the butter and stir in the garlic powder and rosemary (if using).
- Brush with Garlic Butter: Once the biscuits are done, remove them from the oven and brush the tops with the melted garlic butter. Serve immediately.
Notes
- Use cold butter: Cold butter is key to getting flaky, buttery biscuits.
- Don’t overmix: When adding the milk, mix just until the dough comes together. Overmixing will result in dense biscuits.
- Brush with garlic butter: Don’t skip the garlic butter topping—it adds that final touch of flavor and makes the biscuits extra irresistible.
- Cheese variations: Try swapping sharp cheddar for gouda, mozzarella, or parmesan for a different cheesy flavor.
