With custard-soaked bread, juicy blueberries, and a golden crumb topping, it’s soft on the inside, crisp on top, and bursting with flavor. Perfect for feeding a crowd without early-morning prep!

Ingredients

Scale
    • For the Casserole:
    • 1 loaf (14–16 oz) day-old French bread, cubed
    • 1 3/4 cups (420ml) whole milk
    • 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream
    • 6 large eggs
    • 1/3 cup (67g) granulated sugar
    • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 2 cups (300g) fresh or frozen blueberries

    • For the Crumb Topping:
    • 1/2 cup (65g) all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed

  • Optional: powdered sugar or maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  1. Prep the bread: Cut day-old French bread into 1-inch cubes.
  2. Make the custard: Whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
  3. Assemble: Grease a 9×13-inch dish. Layer half the bread, half the blueberries, then repeat. Pour custard over the top and gently press bread down. Cover and refrigerate at least 3 hours or overnight.
  4. Make crumb topping: Mix flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Cut in cold butter until crumbly. Keep chilled.
  5. Bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C). Sprinkle crumb topping over casserole. Bake 45–50 minutes or until golden and set. Cool 10 minutes.
  6. Serve: Dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with maple syrup.

Notes

  • Use sturdy bread like French, brioche, or sourdough.
  • Don’t thaw frozen blueberries—add straight from the freezer.
  • Overnight soaking gives the best texture.
  • Add lemon zest for brightness or cream cheese cubes for richness.
  • Great for holidays, brunch, meal prep, or hosting guests.
