Description

When classic comfort food meets gourmet indulgence, magic happens—just like with these Brown Butter Dulce de Leche Rice Krispie Treats.

Ingredients

Scale

Here’s everything you’ll need to make a batch of these indulgent cereal bars:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1 bag (10 oz) mini marshmallows
  • 1/2 cup dulce de leche (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal

Optional toppings:

  • Extra drizzle of dulce de leche
  • Flaky sea salt for garnish
  • Melted chocolate or white chocolate drizzle

Instructions

  1. Prep your pan: Line a baking dish with parchment paper or lightly coat with non-stick spray. Set aside.
  2. Brown the butter: In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until it turns golden brown and smells nutty. This takes about 4–5 minutes. Watch closely to avoid burning.
  3. Add marshmallows and dulce de leche: Reduce heat to low. Add marshmallows, stirring until almost fully melted. Then stir in the dulce de leche and a pinch of sea salt until the mixture is smooth and combined.
  4. Add cereal: Remove from heat. Gently fold in the Rice Krispies cereal, stirring until fully coated with the gooey mixture.
  5. Press into pan: Pour the mixture into the prepared pan. Lightly press it into an even layer using a spatula or clean hands. (Tip: Spray hands with a bit of cooking spray to prevent sticking.)
  6. Cool and set: Let the treats cool at room temperature for 1 hour before slicing. For quicker setting, place the pan in the fridge for 20–30 minutes.
  7. Slice and garnish: Cut into squares and optionally drizzle with extra dulce de leche or a sprinkle of flaky salt for presentation.

Notes

  • Don’t rush the browning butter: That golden color brings an incredible depth of flavor—watch closely and remove from heat as soon as it smells nutty.
  • Avoid overcooking the marshmallows: Melting them slowly over low heat ensures your treats stay soft and chewy.
  • Use parchment paper in your dish: It makes cleanup and lifting the bars out effortless.
  • Gently press the mixture: Pressing too hard can make the bars too dense—use a light hand.
