Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Bread & Berries
- Cut the French bread or brioche into bite-sized cubes.
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and spread half of the bread cubes evenly.
- Sprinkle half of the mixed berries over the bread. Add the remaining bread and top with the rest of the berries.
Step 2: Make the Custard Mixture
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.
- Pour the mixture evenly over the bread and berries, pressing down gently to absorb.
Step 3: Prepare the Streusel Topping
- In a small bowl, mix flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon.
- Stir in melted butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Sprinkle evenly over the casserole.
Step 4: Refrigerate or Bake
- Overnight Option: Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Bake Immediately: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and let the casserole sit at room temperature for 20 minutes before baking.
Step 5: Bake & Serve
- Bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes until golden brown and slightly crisp on top.
- Let cool for 5 minutes, then dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup or whipped cream.
Notes
- Use stale bread – Day-old bread absorbs the custard better without getting soggy.
- Make it extra crispy – Bake uncovered for the last 10 minutes.
- Add a crunchy topping – Sprinkle with chopped pecans or almonds.
