Description

These Authentic Irish Potato Farls are a beloved traditional breakfast item with a crisp golden crust and soft, fluffy interior. Made with simple ingredients like mashed potatoes, flour, and butter, they’re pan-fried to perfection and perfect alongside eggs, beans, or jam for a comforting start to your day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (about 450g) cold mashed potatoes (plain or lightly seasoned)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted or softened)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • Optional toppings or sides:
  • Soft butter for serving
  • Fried eggs, baked beans, sautéed mushrooms
  • A spoonful of jam or honey

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine mashed potatoes, butter, and salt. Mix until smooth. Gradually add in flour and stir until the dough forms.
  2. Transfer dough to a floured surface. Knead lightly and shape into a 1/2 inch thick circle. Cut into 4 quarters.
  3. Heat a dry skillet over medium heat. Cook each farl for 3–4 minutes per side until golden and crisp outside, soft inside.
  4. Serve warm with butter or alongside your favorite breakfast items.

Notes

  • Use cold mashed potatoes for best dough texture.
  • Don’t overwork the dough to keep farls tender.
  • Preheat skillet well before cooking.
  • Adjust flour based on potato moisture.
  • Best served fresh but can be stored and reheated in a skillet.
