Apple & Pumpkin Pie Chew Sticks Dog Chew Recipe – Healthy Homemade Treats for Your Pup

  • Author: Lyndy
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 20 chew sticks 1x

Description

Apple & Pumpkin Pie Chew Sticks are wholesome, chewy, and naturally nutritious dog treats made with pumpkin, apple, and oats. These homemade dog chews are packed with fiber, vitamins, and flavor your pup will love — a healthy, preservative-free alternative to store-bought snacks that supports digestion and dental health.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsweetened pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce or grated fresh apple
  • 2 1/2 cups oat flour or whole wheat flour
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 egg
  • 12 tbsp water as needed for texture

Optional Additions:

  • 1 tbsp natural peanut butter (xylitol-free)
  • 1/2 tsp ground flaxseed
  • 1 tsp coconut oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Set oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix wet ingredients: In a large bowl, combine pumpkin puree, applesauce, and egg until smooth.
  3. Add dry ingredients: Gradually stir in oat flour and rolled oats until a thick, pliable dough forms. Add water if needed.
  4. Shape the sticks: Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness and cut into stick-shaped pieces appropriate for your dog’s size.
  5. Bake: Arrange on the baking sheet and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until firm and lightly golden. For crunchier chews, bake 5 minutes longer.
  6. Cool and store: Allow treats to cool completely on a wire rack before serving. Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week or freeze for 2 months.

Notes

  • Use plain pumpkin puree — never sweetened or spiced pie filling.
  • Adjust texture with more flour or water depending on dough consistency.
  • For softer chews, bake slightly less; for crunchier ones, extend baking time.
  • Always cool treats fully before storage to prevent mold.
  • Portion size: Treats should not exceed 10% of your dog’s daily calories.
