Ingredients
Scale
For the Apple Filling:
- 6 medium Gala apples (or your choice), peeled and sliced thin
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tbsp flour (all-purpose or gluten-free 1:1)
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
For the Oatmeal Crisp Topping:
- 3/4 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 baking dish.
- In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice, then mix in flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar. Spread evenly in baking dish.
- In another bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Stir in melted butter until crumbly.
- Sprinkle oat topping evenly over apples without pressing down.
- Bake 40–45 minutes, until topping is golden brown and filling is bubbling.
- Cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Enjoy warm with ice cream, whipped cream, or caramel sauce.
Notes
- Use Gala apples for a naturally sweet crisp, or mix tart and sweet apples for more depth.
- Rolled oats provide the best topping texture — quick oats will be softer.
- Add chopped nuts, cranberries, or extra spices to customize.
- To make ahead, assemble and refrigerate unbaked crisp up to 24 hours before baking.
- For gluten-free, use certified GF oats and flour blend.
