Description

Amish Apple Fritter Bread is the ultimate cozy fall treat, combining tender cinnamon-swirled bread, juicy apples, and a sweet vanilla glaze. Moist, aromatic, and full of comforting flavor, it’s perfect for breakfast, dessert, or gifting. Easy to make from scratch or with cake mix, this recipe delivers all the charm of a bakery-style apple fritter in simple loaf form.

Ingredients

Scale
  • From Scratch Version:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk or buttermilk
  • Apple Filling:
  • 2 medium apples (peeled and diced – Honeycrisp or Granny Smith)
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Brown Sugar Swirl:
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Vanilla Glaze:
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 12 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional Shortcut: 1 box vanilla cake mix (use in place of dry ingredients for a quicker version)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the Batter: Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Alternate adding dry ingredients with milk until smooth.
  3. Make the Apple Filling and Swirl: Mix diced apples with brown sugar and cinnamon. In a separate bowl, mix the swirl ingredients (brown sugar and cinnamon).
  4. Layer the Batter: Pour half of the batter into the loaf pan, top with half of the apple mixture and swirl, then repeat. Lightly swirl the layers with a knife.
  5. Bake: Bake for 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a rack.
  6. Glaze: Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Drizzle over cooled bread and let set before slicing.
  7. Shortcut Version: Mix 1 box vanilla cake mix with 3 eggs, 1/2 cup oil, and 1/2 cup milk. Fold in apples and swirl mixture. Bake at 350°F for 40 minutes, glaze as above.

Notes

  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for the best flavor balance.
  • Don’t overmix the batter—mix just until combined for a tender crumb.
  • Cool the bread completely before glazing to avoid melting the icing.
  • This loaf freezes beautifully—wrap tightly in plastic and foil for up to 2 months.
  • Double the recipe to gift extra loaves during the holidays.
